Basseterre, St. Kitts— Speaking on WINN FM’s News Inside program, Prime Minister Mr. Dr. In response to the host’s comments, Terrance Drew explained that the government’s decision to implement an 8% pay increase for civil servants was driven by its commitment to improving fiscal stability and economic empowerment. “Double pay.”

Prime Minister Drew emphasized that the increase is part of a wider strategy to invest in people by providing sustainable financial benefits to civil servants and their families.

“Our focus is on people; ensuring stability, security and creating opportunities for them to thrive in the long term.”

The Prime Minister explained that although the 8% increase was effectively equivalent to an additional month’s salary in a year, the aim was not to make comparisons with traditional ‘double salaries’ but to provide consistent and sustainable financial benefits.

“This increase is taking a toll on civil servants month after month, impacting their ability to save, invest and plan for the future,” Prime Minister Drew said.

The salary adjustment reflects the government’s people-oriented approach and provides concrete long-term benefits for workers:

  • The increase increases Social Security premiums, allowing for higher pension benefits after retirement.

  • With a higher base salary, civil servants have access to better loan terms and financing opportunities, allowing them to invest in housing, education and other priorities.

  • Civil servants are now eligible for increased benefits, including sick leave, maternity leave and disability payments, further bolstering their financial security.

“This approach provides workers with greater stability and security, while putting them on stronger financial footing. We’re building a future where our workforce feels supported and empowered. “The focus will always be on our people, not political optics or short-term gains.”

The Prime Minister concluded his speech by reiterating that the government’s policies are designed to promote growth, stability and security for civil servants and their families. “Our goal is to ensure that every citizen feels the benefits of a strong and resilient economy. This increase is a reflection of this determination.”
