Knecht, who scored just two points on 1-of-8 shooting in a win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Nov. 8, was getting angry as his role expanded. He averaged 20.4 points with 66.7 percent three-point shooting in his last five games.

This created a good problem for head coach JJ Redick to deal with. Hachimura was off to a solid start to the season and is relied upon for his defensive versatility, but Knecht elevates the offense for a team that doesn’t have many knockout shooters.

Despite Knecht’s recent stretch, the Lakers are still average He is the player who makes the sixth fewest three-pointers per game in the NBA (33.6).

No matter what Redick chooses to do with the roster, the Lakers appear to have some things figured out after four losses in five games. They have won six in a row so far, including the NBA Cup games they have played.

This six-game series was against a positive schedule; The Memphis Grizzlies (8-7) are now the only team with a winning record that the Lakers have defeated. Four of their wins came against the Philadelphia 76ers, Toronto Raptors, Utah Jazz and New Orleans Pelicans. The combined record for this quartet is 12-45.

Things will start to get harder for the Lakers, who will host the Orlando Magic starting on Thursday. This begins a series in which they will also play the Denver Nuggets, Phoenix Suns, San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder over the next nine days.

Knecht’s hot shooting couldn’t have come at a better time as the Lakers prepare for a tough battle with quality opponents. They moved up to third place in the Western Conference standings, trailing the Golden State Warriors (10-3) by just one game in the losing standings.
