A jury in the civil case against Conor McGregor must consider whether the Irish mixed martial arts fighter ‘concocted a horrific and humiliating pornographic fantasy’ about a woman who accused him of raping her in a hotel.

Mr Justice Alexander Owens told the jury on Wednesday that if they concluded Mr McGregor had assaulted Ms Hand and assessed damages in the case, they could take that into account when assessing aggravated damages.

Mr McGregor faces charges in a civil case that he ‘brutally raped and assaulted’ Nikita Hand at a hotel in south Dublin in December 2018.

The Irish sports star had previously told the court he had consensual sex with Ms Hand on the rooftop of the Beacon Hotel.

Ms Hand, also known as Nikita Ni Laimhin, is also suing another man, James Lawrence, for assault.

Continuing his speech before the jury of four men and eight women, Judge Owens said that McGregor’s statement to the police after the alleged incident was inadmissible because it was a statement made outside the court.

However, they can consider whether he ‘made up’ a story involving Ms Hand.

Judge Owens also told the jury they could not speculate and had to consider all the evidence.

He told them they couldn’t speculate about what a witness might say if they were more forthcoming when testifying in court.

He said silent witnesses citing CCTV footage and phone records were more credible.

He said the ‘silent witness’ had no ‘known ax to grind’ and would be considered more credible.

Judge Owens urged the jury to examine the CCTV carefully and added that they were not bound by counsel’s views on what they saw in the footage.

He also warned the jury that witnesses, especially those who had been drinking, were ‘very wrong’ when talking about the timings.

He said it may be useless to ask a person for their opinion on time because you will only be receiving ‘guests’.

He also referred to evidence from Mr Lawrence, who claimed Ms Hand had sex with her friend Danielle Kealy three times in a short period of time before leaving the hotel.

The jury was also told that Ms Hand’s evidence was that she texted her ex-boyfriend when she woke up in her hotel room shortly after 6pm, but CCTV footage showed her in the hotel car park at the time she sent the message.

‘Was this a lie or something that confused him?’ Mr. Owens presented it to the jury.

He also asked them to consider that they could see Ms Hand and Mr Lawrence in the lift when they tried to return to their hotel room, and that footage showed the couple leaving the hotel shortly after 10.30pm.

As for compensation, Judge Owens urged the jury to ‘stay away’ from what was stated in the pleadings, including references to Ms Hand being a ‘con artist’ and a ‘gold digger’.
