The medical examiner’s office said the woman suffered multiple sharp force injuries. His death is being treated as a homicide.

The suspect found dead was identified as 57-year-old Constantin Beldie, also from Chicago.

Court documents detail the tragic story of a woman who feared for her life and tried to distance herself from what she described as a dangerous relationship with her husband.

The accused attacker appeared in court on Monday accused of strangling and beating her before he allegedly took his own life a day later.

Neighbors said security cameras showed her walking on the sidewalk when a man waited for her and that’s when he attacked her.

What some are calling a massive failure of the justice system reached a deadly conclusion on a residential block in the Jefferson Park neighborhood on Tuesday. An off-duty police officer in Chicago tried to save the life of Lacramioara Beldie, who was allegedly attacked by her husband with a knife.

“Initially I heard screams, a woman screaming, then gunshots,” said witness Thomas Desenfants. “All of a sudden your heart sinks. You know something terrible has happened.”

The incident occurred in the 5600 block of West Leland Boulevard just after 2:20 p.m.

According to CPD, the officer was grazed by a bullet in the process, but was unable to save Lacramioara Beldie’s life.

“I saw the suspect walk away. The off-duty police officer collapsed with a leg injury and did not notice the woman on the sidewalk until police arrived,” Desenfants said.

Court documents tell the story of a woman who worked for months to keep her husband away from her and, just this year, sought not one but two protective orders against Constantin Beldie. The most recent was last month after he was accused of beating, strangling and holding her against her will.

Prosecutors told the court Constantin Beldie was a flight risk and a real and present threat to society and should be detained. Instead he was released with electronic monitoring.

“I think it was a broken justice system that allowed this suspect to get out, and if everything went the way it was supposed to, there would be two more people alive today,” Desenfants said. he said.

Constantin Beldie was found dead in a vehicle a block away from where his wife was killed.

The off-duty detective is recovering.

The Chicago Civilian Office of Police Accountability responded to the incident and the Investigative Response Team also investigated the scene.

The officer concerned will be placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days.
