He said: ‘I wasn’t expecting this kind of reaction, I’m incredibly refreshed and proud. I think we can do this calmly. We have to keep this in context, the kids didn’t hear my comments and then they said, what are you talking about? They were (humble)’

Saoyse admitted she was worried she had gotten into a bad situation after the interview was filmed and went for a drink with Paul immediately afterwards.

He said: ‘Most of the show is there but it’s been edited out. I came in after we shot the movie, and Paul and I went out for drinks afterwards and I was so confused about it.

‘I thought I was terrible at this tonight. I forgot everything that was said. I was worried about it airing after it aired, maybe two days later, then my best friend told me everyone had contacted me about the phone comment.

‘I am so grateful for a comment I made to start a conversation that absolutely needed to be had.’

He added: ‘I think I had a moment of honesty when I was feeling down. Then I thought, no, no he shouldn’t do that.

‘Because this was the kind of conversation I would have with my female friends and my male friends (one of whom was Paul Mescal).

‘The women in my life are very vocal about their experiences. I’ve never really shied away from it.’

On Irish broadcaster RTE’s The Late Late Show, Paul was asked if they were surprised by the reception.

He replied: ‘No, I don’t believe we’re surprised, because as you said, you’re on a talk show like this and you’re just kind of talking.

‘But I’m not surprised that the message got so much attention, because it’s so important and I’m sure you’ve seen Saoyse on the show, like she’s… most of the time, most of the time, she’s the smartest person in the room.

‘But I think it was… it was spot on, it hit the nail on the head and that’s good too… messages like that attract attention, like this is a conversation we absolutely should be having on a daily basis.’

Paul, the star of Normal People, who was nominated for the best actor Oscar for the TV series Aftersun, is currently starring in the highly anticipated blockbuster Gladiator II.

Earlier this year, Saoirse appeared in The Outrun, about a woman struggling with alcoholism.
