Son of Norway’s crown princess detained for a week in rape investigation

The son of Norway’s crown princess will be sentenced to up to a week in prison while police investigate rape accusations against him, a judge ruled Wednesday.

Police on Monday detained 27-year-old Marius Borg Hoiby, the stepson of Mette-Marit and Crown Prince Haakon, and said he was suspected of having sexual intercourse with two unconscious or motionless women.

A police spokesman said each rape charge concerned “sexual intercourse without intercourse”, without elaborating.

Hoiby’s lawyer, Oeyvind Bratlien, said his client was innocent and opposed preventive detention.

It is not yet clear whether Hoiby will appeal the court’s decision to detain him for security reasons.

Investigators requested permission to detain him for up to two weeks.
