81-year-old woman charged with man’s death after breaking into a building in Canton

An 81-year-old woman is facing vehicular homicide and vehicular manslaughter charges in connection with a crash that killed a 69-year-old grandfather.

Jackson Township police say Barbara J. O’Donnell entered Angello’s 2 Go pizza shop on Oct. 4 when she accidentally pressed the accelerator pedal of her vehicle instead of the brake pedal.

O’Donnell is also charged with operating a vehicle without reasonable control, a misdemeanor.

The charges come a day after News 5 Investigators revealed how the lack of regulation for aging drivers is having serious and deadly consequences on our roadways.

According to the police report, 69-year-old Andrew Grosschmidt, who was standing at the front counter of the restaurant, died in the accident, while O’Donnell accidentally drove his car in front of the workplace.

Vehicular homicide is a first-degree misdemeanor, punishable by up to 180 days in prison and a $1,000 fine. Vehicular manslaughter is a second-degree misdemeanor, punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $750 fine.

O’Donnell is scheduled for a hearing at 8:45 a.m. Dec. 2 in Massillon Municipal Court.
