Winnipeg police ‘can’t prove’ reports of gunman at U of M

The Winnipeg Police Service said they were unable to determine whether a man with a knife was on the University of Manitoba campus Tuesday.

There were reports Tuesday that a man armed with a large knife was seen in a building on campus.

The incident prompted a serious response from police, the cancellation of classes and the sending of emergency alerts through the state’s Alert Ready Emergency Alert System.

“Investigators explored multiple sources of evidence; however, we were unable to substantiate the information revealed,” police said in a statement on Thursday.

Officers added that based on initial reports and details provided, they believed the action plan was timely and appropriate.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing and anyone with information or who was caught on camera is asked to contact police.
