Zoe Nicole Cooper, 18, was taken into custody on November 15 and charged with: second degree murder for stabbing her ex-boyfriend, 19-year-old Tadarius Madquise Massey. It is unknown whether he is enrolled as a student at TSU.

The murder occurred on the night of August 14, 2024, after an argument broke out between the couple after Massey did not allow Cooper to look at his phone. Massey was stabbed multiple times.

Friends who saw the couple immediately after the attack claimed Cooper frantically said: “I didn’t mean it.” The group took Massey to the hospital, and others let Massey in as Cooper drove toward his home.

Cooper, who had a black eye, cooperated with law enforcement following the attack and provided a detailed account of the events. He said the stabbing was the build-up to a long physical fight in which both men hit each other and held the knife, painting a picture that he may have killed her in self-defense. However, the evidence and investigation after the incident will tell a different story.

Cooper had no injuries other than a black eye, which police deemed suspicious due to the alleged prolonged fight. Details in the timeline of events, such as Massey stabbing stuffed animals and pouring drinks on them during the attack, also could not be confirmed by evidence at the scene.

The day after Massey’s death, Cooper posted an Instagram Reel featuring a photo of himself and Massey with the caption: “I don’t expect anyone to understand my side of the story, I apologize for the pain I have caused anyone and everyone. If I could take it or replace it in a heartbeat I would #LLTD I love you always I’m truly sorry for what I did it wasn’t supposed to be this way (sic).”

Massey’s autopsy report showed two healed stab wounds near his left shoulder, as well as fresh stab wounds from the night of the attack on his wrist, forearm, shoulder and heart. He also had a cut on his forehead and scratches on his neck, indicating strangulation.

During the investigation, authorities uncovered disturbing allegations that Cooper had been abused during the couple’s relationship.

Police found photos on Massey’s phone of fresh stab wounds on his left shoulder dating back to March. They also found numerous messages in which Cooper claimed responsibility for the initial stabbing and threatened future violence, saying things like “I wish you had died that day,” “I’m glad I stabbed you (sic),” and so on. I should have killed you” and “I will spit on your grave (sic).”

Authorities spoke with the manager of the Subway restaurant where Massey worked; The manager said Massey would arrive at work looking “beaten up” and admitted to him that Cooper had attacked him. He also said Cooper would come to the restaurant to watch Massey work and that the two would not talk during those visits.

There was also an incident in December 2023 when Cooper attacked Massey at Ocoee High School in Florida because she wouldn’t let him look at his phone to see if he was contacting other girls. Massey did not respond during the attack, and an assistant principal at the school stated that Massey had previously told him that he had been attacked and stabbed by Cooper.

Officials with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in Florida have not confirmed whether Cooper has been returned to the state where the crime occurred to face charges.
