Strip club attacker pleads guilty to assault

A man accused of firing a gun at a strip club in downtown London pleaded guilty on Thursday to assaulting an employee at the bar.

Kwabena Andrew Anhwere, 42, pleaded guilty to assaulting a female employee at Solid Gold on April 29 and was sentenced to 30 days in jail; This equates to 20 days in custody and he was sentenced to 18 months probation.

Several other gun-related charges against Anhwere, who remains in custody, were referred to the Ontario Superior Court.

An agreed statement of facts was read into the record, describing the events leading up to the attack on staff at the Dundas Street bar, one of two remaining strip clubs in the city.

Anhwere, who was known to several workers at the strip club, approached an employee while at the bar, put his hand close to her crotch and asked her to hit the woman’s hand, the court heard.

Anhwere hit him before being kicked out of the bar, the court heard.

“My client was celebrating his birthday tonight. He was quite drunk tonight. Obviously this doesn’t offer an excuse or any defense, but a lot of things happened that night and unfortunately my client reacted badly,” said defense attorney Aaron Prevost.

OPP shuts down illegal marijuana store

An illegal cannabis store in Leamington has been shut down by police and a Chatham woman is facing multiple charges.

On November 6, officers from the Essex County OPP community street crimes unit and the OPP-led provincial joint forces cannabis enforcement team searched Island Fire Cannabis in Leamington.

Police said they seized illegal dried marijuana and other illegal cannabis products, including edibles, shatter and e-cigarette cartridges, with an estimated value of $13,500.

A 39-year-old Chatham woman was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell, unlawful possession of marijuana and possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
