Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman and his wife, Saira, decided to separate after nearly thirty years of marriage. Their lawyer, Vandana Shah, confirmed that the decision was mutual and emphasized the importance of respecting the family’s privacy during this difficult time. “The divorce has not happened yet. I represent both of them. I cannot explain the reason but it is 29 years of marriage. In every marriage there are ups and downs. It is a painful decision but It is a mutual decision, the family’s privacy needs to be respected at this point,” Vandana said while talking to ANI .

The news was first shared in a joint statement from Saira’s lawyer. Vandana Shah. The couple stated that their decision was due to “significant emotional strain” in their relationship.

“On behalf and on the instructions of Ms. Saira and her husband, renowned musician Allahrakka Rahman (AR Rahman), Vandana Shah and Associates has issued the following statement regarding the couple’s decision to part ways,” the statement read in part.

“After many years of marriage, Mrs. Saira and her husband, Mr. A R. Rahman, took the difficult decision to separate from each other. This decision came after serious emotional strain in their relationship. Despite their deep love for each other, the couple realized that tensions and difficulties had created an unbridgeable gulf between them, a gulf that neither party could currently bridge. “Ms. Saira and her husband, Mr. A R. Rahman, emphasize that they have taken this decision out of pain and suffering,” the statement said.

The composer shared this news on his X account on Wednesday and stated that they hope to reach the “big thirty”, but life has other plans.

“We had hoped to reach the big thirty, but it seems that everything has an unseen end. Even God’s throne may tremble under the weight of broken hearts. Yet in this fragmentation we seek meaning, no matter how broken the pieces are. We will never find their place again. To our friends, from this delicate time Thank you for your kindness and respect for our privacy in passing.”

AR Rahman and Saira got married in 1995 and have three children named Khatija, Raheema and Ameen.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Rahman was recently honored with ‘XTIC Innovation Award 2024’ by IIT Madras for his virtual reality film Le Musk. The world-famous composer also released the film’s soundtrack worldwide through Believe Music. Over the years, Rahman has composed iconic music for films like Roja, Bombay, Dil Se, Lagaan and Rockstar. He gained international fame for his work on Slumdog Millionaire, which earned him two Academy Awards.

Apart from Bollywood, Rahman has also worked in Hollywood films such as 127 Hours and Million Dollar Arm. He has also collaborated with global artists such as Mick Jagger, Andrew Lloyd Webber and will.i.am.
