In the heart of working-class East Wall, Clare Daly stood outside a house with a poster of Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald in its front window. The independent candidate and former MP shrugged and headed up the garden path.

“I’m going to ask them for number 3,” Ms Daly said, acknowledging the fact that residents’ first and second choices would be Ms McDonald and her running mate and councilor Janice Boylan in Dublin Central.
