The only father figure in the boy’s life was his grandfather, who taught him everything from music and singing to how to deal with bullies. As much as it pained Gerald to send the child away, he knew it was in George’s best interest. She was worried that one day the bombings would reach them, and she didn’t want to think about what would happen to George if they couldn’t find shelter in time. Eventually his fears are confirmed and he tragically loses his own life.

One day after Rita puts George on the train, she discovers that George never made it to his destination. She spends the day trying to find her son, spreading the news and hoping to find him on the way home. Gerald wants to help, but Rita tells him to stay there in case George returns home. That night, Gerald goes to bed with their pet Olly. Rita comes home late, tired of searching for her son all day. He cannot sleep, which perhaps saves his life because soon bombs are dropped on the city once again.

The next morning, George finds his way home but discovers his house is in ruins. It turns out that the previous night’s bombs reached George’s house. He shudders to think about what might have happened to his family. the first thing he saw Olly the cat who survived the bombing. Unfortunately, his grandfather did not do this. He is seen lying on his bed with everything in the house destroyed. Apparently Gerald was still in bed when the bombs went off and couldn’t even get out of there when the bombs fell. Like the people in the cafe where a group of thieves were stealing jewels from dead people, Gerald most likely died from bursting lungs from the explosion. He didn’t stand a chance, but luckily his daughter and grandson survived and were eventually reunited.
