New Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4 will hit the market in 2026 with major revisions inside and out

Speaking to Auto Express at the Los Angeles Auto Show, VW’s development boss Kai Grünitz told Auto Express: “We will be re-skinning with a completely new design language that goes back to where we originally did the design for the ID.4 and ID.3.” “It came from that perspective and went back to what Volkswagen is known for.”

His comments refer to the future design language spearheaded by VW’s head of design Andy Mindt, whose first all-new model will be a production version of the ID.2All concept, due in late 2025.

It sees a return to the more traditional two-box silhouette, with simple design features and a sense of solidity that many felt was missing from the early ID models.

Kai continued: “We also have many improvements in terms of battery costs and performance, and we will also introduce new features and driver support functions. Therefore, it will be a great improvement both in terms of cost for us and benefits for customers.”

Part of this update also includes a reinvention of the interior design and interfaces, with the return of some physical buttons on the dashboard and center console, as seen on the ID.2All concept. A solid increase in interior quality is also expected.

However, while the MEB platform is being developed, it will continue to retain some of its key technical elements, including a rear-wheel drive layout and advanced multi-link rear suspension. The move to front-mounted engines and simpler rear suspension design will be reserved for the smaller MEB Entry models.

Shorter details have not yet been revealed; The 2026 launch date fits within the traditional seven-year model cycle for VW, but that doesn’t mean the SSP platform that will replace it has been scrapped.
