Man convicted of road rage shooting that killed Phoenix girl; he is running away

PHOENIX (AZ Family) — A guilty verdict was given against a man He was accused of killing an eight-year-old girl in a road rage incident. in Phoenix. But in this case it is nowhere to be found.

Prosecutors say Sidney Garrand fired six shots at another car near 16th Street and Greenway Road in north Phoenix two years ago.

One of the bullets hit and killed eight-year-old Cassidy Moreno.

In December 2022, Garrand pleaded not guilty and was released on electronic monitoring following a $500,000 bail.

Two months later, Phoenix police announced that a warrant had been issued for Garrand’s arrest.

Garrand fled after posting his $500,000 bond, and authorities believe he is hiding in Mexico.

Yet the case was heard without him. Following Thursday’s guilty verdict, sentencing will wait until Garrand is found and extradited back to Arizona.

Although rare, such cases occur from time to time.

There was a high-profile case in 2009 in Maricopa County in which a man on trial managed to evade deputies. The judge decided that the suspect, who was later caught and sentenced, should continue the trial.
