Mr Justice Alex Owens finished his two-day stint before the jury of eight women and four men yesterday.

The panel continued its work negotiations This morning, after eight days of reviewing the evidence.

CROSS EXAM

Cross-examined by Ms Hand’s lawyer, John Gordon, Mr McGregor denied causing the bruises, saying they were “probably caused by him diving into the bathroom”.

However, Mr Gordon drew the jury’s attention to medical evidence regarding the severity of Ms Hand’s bruises.

And Ms Hand’s lawyer stressed that the tampon had to be removed from her using forceps when she went to hospital following the alleged rape.

Ms Hand gave statements alleging Mr McGregor raped her in her hotel room while she was on her period and using tampons.

The jury heard evidence that the tampon the plaintiff wore that night had to be removed by the doctor using forceps.

Mr Gordon said it was “clear” as the trial approached that Mr McGregor “thought the tampon would cause problems” and that was why he claimed Ms Hand did not have one.

Mr Gordon said Mr McGregor and Mr Lawrence’s claims that there was no tampon were never put to Ms Hand in court because Mr McGregor did not tell his legal team.

Mr Gordon said: “It was a completely new version of events. “Instead of my client repeating that he was a liar, the liar here is Mr McGregor, who did not have the courage or decency to admit what he had done.

“He’s not a man, he’s a sneaky coward and you should treat him like he is.”

Referring to the bruises on Ms Hand’s body, Mr Gordon said: “Let’s put it this way: Someone did it. It happened at the Beacon Hotel. It was Mr McGregor.”
