Plex is overhauling its apps with redesigns and stealth upgrades

A major rework is underway, including a redesign with improved navigation and more prominent artwork. The streaming service has been working on the revision for almost two years. The team rewrote the apps from scratch to unify the code base and make the Plex experience more consistent, fluid, and easier to update across platforms. Plex says this greatly increases development speed, so it should be able to deliver new features more efficiently.

Perhaps the first thing you’ll notice is a greater emphasis on artwork, particularly show and movie detail pages, your personal profile, and profile pages for cast and crew. You should see more title images for movies and shows, too.

Helping people navigate the app is one of the main drivers behind the overhaul. Plex says the rework helps existing users navigate the app more intuitively while making it easier for newcomers to grasp things. Those who use Plex to access personal media will find their library in a special tab. will cover premium real estate in the top navigation. Plex says it’s also streamlined the user menu for quick access to things like your profile, friends, and watch history.

The redesign appears to be long overdue. Plex seems a bit dated right now, especially when you hold it up against the likes of the Netflix app. Any navigation upgrades would be welcomed. Hopefully download speeds improve too – as it stands, it takes me too long to grab anything from Plex for offline viewing

To make sure everything runs smoothly as intended across a wide range of devices and setups, Plex is offering users the chance to preview overhauled apps in the hope they’ll provide feedback. some of them features are missing (like streaming and offline support) are available for now, but will update the apps frequently to add more.
