Karnataka HC rejects Prajwal Revanna’s bail plea in the fourth case too

The Karnataka High Court on Friday rejected the bail petition filed by Prajwal Revanna, grandson of suspended JD-S leader and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, the main culprit in the sensational sex video scandal, in the fourth case filed against him.

The court had earlier rejected the former MP’s bail plea in three cases and the verdict on the fourth case, which related to the alleged rape of a former Zilla Panchayat member in his office, was pending.

A bench of Justice M. Nagaprasanna gave the verdict in the case, rejecting the bail plea.

The former Zilla Panchayat member accused Revanna of sexually assaulting her over a period of three years and recording videos of the act, which were allegedly used to threaten and blackmail her into cooperating with the former MP’s demands.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) is investigating four cases against Prajwal Revanna, three of which are rape cases and one in which a video of a sexual harassment victim has been recorded.

Revanna’s lawyer Arun submitted to the court that he wanted to withdraw the bail petition from the court. However, the bench maintained that the bail application cannot be withdrawn on the day the orders will be announced. The court also said that it did not rely on the charge sheet filed in the case while passing the order.

The court stated that “based on the complaint and the Supreme Court decision, the bail request was rejected.”

The Supreme Court rejected Revanna’s bail request on November 11.

Revanna’s senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi alleged that the opponents had hatched a conspiracy to gain political advantage. “I’ve been an MP before, I was contesting MPs and I lost because of all this,” he said, adding that a charge sheet had been opened against Revanna and she had been behind bars for four months.

Refusing to consider the matter, the bench headed by Justice Bela M. Trivedi rejected the special leave petition seeking Revanna’s release on bail. The Bench, also comprising Justice SC Sharma, said it would not pass any order granting freedom to apply for bail again after a period of six months.

In an order passed on October 21, the Karnataka High Court had rejected Revanna’s bail plea filed in connection with two rape cases and a video recording case of a sexual harassment victim.

One of Hassan’s victims had filed a rape case against Prajwal Revanna at the Bengaluru Cyber police station. The court had previously rejected the bail request in the case.

Another case involved the sexual assault of a servant at his farmhouse in Holenarasipura. The disturbing video of the incident went viral on social media during the Lok Sabha election, where the old maid who was serving food to her father and other elders begged him to spare her, as she was an old lady. Her family had been sexually assaulted, sparking outrage.

The victim was kidnapped after the video was posted on social media and police arrested Revanna’s father and JD-S MLA HD Revanna. He is currently released on conditional bail.

Police had also issued an arrest warrant against Prajwal’s mother Bhavani Revanna in the case. However, he managed to get bail in advance. The bail order was challenged by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the Supreme Court and the top court upheld the bail order passed by the Karnataka High Court.

Another case involved a woman from Hassan, who had approached Revanna for her son’s admission in a reputed school, forcibly undressed and recorded a video of her. Both the cases were registered at Cyber police station in Bengaluru.
