Magoffin County man pleads guilty to child sexual abuse and animal cruelty

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WBKO) – A Magoffin County man was indicted today on charges of possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material and sexual offenses against an animal.

Attorney General Russell Coleman made the announcement.

According to the press release, action by the Attorney General’s Special Prosecution Unit resulted in a 10-year recommended prison sentence for 43-year-old Kent Simpkins of Salyersville.

Law enforcement officials received a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and searched Simpkins’ IP address and social media.

They found numerous photographs of underage children engaging in sexual acts, numerous bestiality videos, and a video of Simpkins having sexual intercourse with the family dog.

He pleaded guilty this week to seven felonies and will receive a 10-year prison sentence, according to the press release.

“A single tip to law enforcement led to a 10-year prison sentence that would keep this dangerous predator away from our children. I am grateful to the investigators and prosecutors who faced this darkness to protect our families from these serious crimes,” Attorney General Coleman said in a press release.

Under the terms of the plea, he will be required to register with the Kentucky Sex Offender Registry for life and receive five years of post-incarceration supervision.

The Kentucky State Police Electronic Crimes Section investigated the incident. Deputy Attorney General Lindsey Studebaker prosecuted the case on behalf of the Commonwealth.

Simpkins will be sentenced on March 6, 2025.
