Champaign man accused of breaking into ex-girlfriend’s home pleads guilty to charges in subsequent chase | Courts-police-shoot

URBANA — A Champaign man accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home last year has pleaded guilty to charges related to the high-speed chase that followed.

Daniel Cordaero-Valle, 35, pleaded guilty to aggravated evading police; therefore, he was sentenced to 180 days in prison, but had previously been sentenced to 538 days in prison.

In exchange for his plea, two counts of home invasion, one count of criminal trespass and one count of residential burglary were dismissed.

According to Assistant State’s Attorney Daniel Reynolds, in May 2023, Cordero-Valle’s ex-girlfriend called Champaign police to say she heard a window in her home breaking and was hiding in a room with her child.

An officer then observed Cordero-Valle driving east on Windsor Road at a high rate of speed and followed him as he turned north on Staley Road, reaching speeds in excess of 90 mph, then west on Springfield Boulevard, reaching speeds of 100 mph. The officer ended the pursuit at the Piatt County line due to safety concerns.

Cordero-Valle was arrested a few hours later after police spotted him in a car on Beardsley Boulevard in Champaign, Reynolds said.
