An old church burned down in Waterford

A fire broke out in a church converted into apartments on Friday night. The fire was a 2nd alarm fire and destroyed the house.

Crews battled a massive fire at a former church in Waterford on Friday night.

Fire crews first arrived at the scene around 18.30 on Friday, and when they arrived at the old church, flames were rising on the roof of the old church.

The former church, located at 110 First Avenue in Waterford, N.Y., was last an apartment, according to firefighters.

Firefighters from several departments worked on the blaze for just over two hours before bringing it under control just before 9pm Friday evening.

Smoke from the fire could be seen from more than a kilometer away.

NewsChannel 13 spoke with North Side Fire District assistant chief Cameron Gardner, who said there were no injuries to any of the firefighters.

Gardner said one person was inside the building when the fire broke out but was safely out of the house by the time crews arrived on scene.

National Grid quickly arrived on the scene and cut off the building’s power.

Crews began demolishing the building just before 11 p.m. Friday.

The Northside Fire District said there is no cause for the fire at this time as it is under investigation by the Saratoga County Fire Investigation Unit.
