Schemitz’s mother, Jaclyn “Jacki” Roge, was also stabbed by Pearson along with the third victim, Kennedy Armstrong, while trying to protect her daughter.

Authorities said Armstong suffered serious hand wounds after he tackled and subdued Pearson until police arrived, but not before the attacker slit his own throat in an attempted suicide.

Following the attack, authorities allege Pearson attacked Schemitz from behind, held him down and stabbed him approximately 15 times. Traumatic injuries left teen star softball player at Ponte Vedra High School abandoned her paralyzed from the chest down.

Less than a year after she was attacked, Schemitz, now a freshman in college, underwent intensive physical therapy and was able to walk on stage to receive her high school diploma, according to SJSO.

Pearson made a statement to the judge before his sentencing, stating that he wanted to “take responsibility for my actions” and “extend my sincerest apologies” to the three victims. WJXT.

“I’m sure June 3 was the worst day of their lives,” Pearson said. “It was also my worst day and always will be. I hurt three innocent people today. Every second of every day I think about the terrible crimes I have committed. “It’s always on my mind and that will never change.”

“I need serious help and have needed it for a long time,” he added.

Following his sentencing, Schemitz shared his own statement. “As we move forward from here, our focus is on healing and rebuilding. “Although this chapter was difficult, it is now behind us,” he said, according to images shared by local media. WJXT. “And although it will take time, we are determined to move forward with hope and strength.”

“For me, the journey is not over yet,” Schemitz continued. “There are still many steps to be taken, many challenges ahead and many lessons to be learned, but I am confident that I will continue to grow stronger every day with the support of those who are by my side. “What’s next is to find peace, embrace the future, and use the strength I’ve gained to help others who may face similar challenges.”
