18-year-old Idaho woman arrested after dead baby found in Safe Haven Baby Box at hospital

an 18 year old woman from idaho According to police, she was arrested for allegedly dropping a dead baby into the Safe Haven Baby Box at the hospital.

Blackfoot Police say Angel N. Newberry was taken into custody on a warrant for failure to report a death to law enforcement and the medical examiner. He was sent to Bingham County Jail.

The Safe Haven Baby Box allows parents to safely and anonymously deliver a newborn under 30 days old without legal consequences, as long as the child is not harmed. But leaving a damaged or dead baby there is not protected.

Newberry’s arrest followed a subsequent investigation. the police responded On October 13, news broke that a dead baby had been left in the baby box at Grove Creek Medical Center.

Safe Haven Baby Boxes said hospital staff responded immediately to the alarm indicating there was a baby in the box, and the baby died long before being left inside.

“Grove Creek Medical Center staff immediately responded to the alarm stating that there was a baby in the box,” Safe Haven Baby Boxes wrote on Facebook last month. “The medical team removed the baby from the crib within a minute. Upon removal, they quickly realized the baby had died long before being placed in the baby box. The Safe Harbor Act in Idaho allows the surrender of a baby who has been lifted from his crib.” Unharmed and healthy. Therefore, this was not a lawful surrender under state law because it did not meet the Safe Harbor surrender criteria.”
