A FORMER gynecologist has been accused of raping 87 women in his practice and filming the attacks for 20 years in a sexual abuse scandal that has rocked Norway.

Arne Bye, 55, is on trial for brutal charges including sexual abuse of two boys who were 14 and 15 at the time of the alleged attacks.

The oldest woman was 67 when Bye allegedly raped her.

He was found guilty of three counts of rape and 35 counts of abuse of position – facing up to 21 years behind bars.

During their investigation, officers seized more than 6,000 hours of footage, including gynecological examinations.

It was claimed that these operations, which the authorities described as “sensitive and detailed”, were performed on patients without their knowledge.

Bye allegedly inserted a “deodorant-like”, “bottle-like” and cylindrical object into women without any medical justification.

“I thought I was going to die,” one woman told the court in Trøndelag.

Another woman, whose name was not released, said she went to her doctor’s office with a sore throat before undergoing one of the invasive exams.

Explaining how she was found on a bench in her underwear, the woman said: “I thought he was my doctor, so I did what he said.”

The indictment against Bye states that the alleged attacks “occurred quickly and unexpectedly” during the examinations.

The events took place in Frosta, a small town on the Norwegian coast with a population of only 2,600.

The court saw the sensational video shot by Bye, in which state prosecutor Richard Haugen Lyng said: “‘We have video footage of the attack.

“In this sense, we have a very special evidentiary situation in the case; a large part of the indictment is shown with video materials,” says the prosecutor.

The former doctor told the court that he recorded his appointments and never followed up on them for fear of being sued.

Norwegian broadcaster NRK said one of the clips showed him placing several cameras in the room before examining one of the women named in the lawsuit.

The outlet also said he partially admitted to the rape charges in court on Wednesday.

Concerns about him were raised as long ago as 2006 by another doctor in the gynecology department of a local hospital.

One of Bye’s patients, who was there for further treatment, said his doctor massaged his genitals during the examination.

Police launched an investigation in August 2022 after health authorities alerted them to the possible behaviour.

Bye was able to keep his job until the following year, when the charges were filed.

He was not taken into custody while the hearing was ongoing.
