Schools and colleges in violence-affected Manipur’s Imphal Valley and Jiribam districts will reopen on Monday, an official said. Schools and colleges will reopen after being closed for a week. The official added that educational institutions in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Kakching and Jiribam were closed last week following the prohibitory order issued by the government following fresh incidents of violence in the state.

Announcing the latest development, the Directorate of National Education and Schools said, “As of November 25, normal classes will continue in all state, public, state-supported, private and central schools.”

Meanwhile, in a separate order, the Department of Higher and Technical Education said, “All government educational institutions/government-aided colleges under the Department of Higher and Technical Education, including public universities, are ordered to resume classes from November 25.”

New violence in Manipur

Notably, on November 11, Manipur Police claimed that 10 suspected militants were killed in a fierce gunfight with security forces. The clash began when insurgents in camouflage uniforms and armed with advanced weapons opened incessant fire on Borobekra Police Station and the neighboring CRPF camp at Jakuradhor in Jiribam district.

Hours later, police claimed that suspected militants abducted six civilians, including women and children, from the same area. Later, on 16 November, the bodies of two women and a child were recovered from the Barak River in Ciribam. Three more bodies, including a woman and two children, were found the night before.

This triggered violent protests in Jiribam on 16 November, with protesters attacking the residences of three ministers and 6 MLAs. Sapam Ranjan, L Susindro Singh and Y Khemchand were among the state ministers whose residences were raided by protesters, an official said. Following the attack, the government imposed a curfew and suspended the internet.

However, angry mobs set fire to the houses of three BJP MPs, including a senior minister, and Congress MLAs in various parts of the Imphal Valley on Saturday night. The house of CM N Biren Singh and his son-in-law was also attacked.

41 people have been arrested so far

Soon after the latest clashes, Union Home Minister Amit Shah held high-level meetings and sent 50 additional CAPF companies. So far, Manipur Police has arrested 41 people involved in the fresh violence.
