Autumn may be approaching, but it hasn’t quite left us yet: Brown leaves are still turning under our feet, ready to be chewed, a light jacket and scarf will still get you where you need to go, and fragrant scents will still take you. Thanksgiving stuffing is almost tangible. This week’s featured poet, Sara Guidice of Shelburne, celebrates the late, fleeting pleasures of the season before the first snowstorm sweeps across the landscape.

Autumn

Sara Guidice, 14, Shelburne

When the leaves fall and I hear your voice,

I’m walking on the crisp ground.

Church bells are ringing as we wait for Thanksgiving

I think to myself, what is there to hate?

I pick apples from trees so high that

and watch the kids run around the playset.

Cool autumn breeze, so cold and scary!

I see my own breath in the dark of the night.

Cold air carries the scent of pine,

Pumpkin pie is sweet and good.

The moon shines through the night,

The days are getting shorter and the moon is shining.

As football season draws to a close, I find myself bored.

But when everything works out, I will always score.

Time passes quickly as always

But it’s different now because it didn’t last long.
