Steve Cooper was dismissed as manager after playing just 15 games in charge of Leicester, which competed in the Premier League.

The former Nottingham Forest boss left the King Power Stadium the day after a flat performance in a 2-1 home defeat to Chelsea that left them two points above the relegation zone.

Cooper was hired last summer on a three-year contract and despite leaving Leicester in the best position of the three teams promoted from the Championship last season.

Despite middling results, Leicester chiefs are alarmed by the standard of performance, while the change of approach between Cooper and former boss Enzo Maresca is also thought to have irritated some players.

Leicester’s next game is at Brentford on Saturday and they will try to get a substitute through the door in time for that game.

Before taking the final step, they could again turn to Graham Potter, who has discussed the job twice following the sacking of Brendan Rodgers in the spring of 2023 and the departure of Maresca.

Leicester resisted sacking Rodgers until it was too late and were relegated at the end of the 2022-23 season.

Mail Sport understands that with the stakes so high, the hierarchy do not want to be left wondering again this time around.

Although not thought to have been a factor in his sacking, Cooper’s vocal criticism of the officials was unusual for a Leicester manager during the Srivaddhanaprabha family’s ownership period.

After Saturday’s game, the Welshman lashed out at referee Andy Madley for not awarding multiple penalties to Leicester in the second half.
