Police say further investigation is ongoing (Representative)

– Sonipat:

A married businessman was arrested for stabbing his live-in partner and school-time sweetheart and setting her body on fire following a domestic dispute in Haryana’s Sonipat, police said on Sunday.

Police said Upkar killed Sarita, with whom he lived for six years after separating from her husband, in Rishi Colony in Civil Lines area on October 25 and burned the entire house to make it look like a fire accident.

“Upkar’s wife was aware of his cohabitation, while Sarita had divorced her husband, whom she had married in 2004. Both of them were living as ‘husband and wife’ for six years,” said Manish Kumar of Ganaur Crime Branch.

Upkar, a resident of Yamunanagar’s Vishnu Nagar, fell into the police net after forensic examination of the body of Sarita, who was originally a resident of Punjab’s Zirakpur and taught at a university here, revealed murder due to stabbing before burns.

An investigator said the court allowed Upkar to be kept in police custody for two days, during which time he would be questioned and taken to the scene of the crime.

Layers of the crime began to emerge after Sarita’s Punjabi brother Trishla filed a complaint at the Civil Lines police station in Sonipat.

In her complaint, Trishla said that Sarita divorced her husband Kapil, with whom she has a daughter, in 2018 and started living with Upkar in Sonipat in 2018, but they had frequent disagreements.

The victim’s brother alleged in his complaint that Sarita told him that Upkar had called him on October 20 and asked for money.

Trishla’s complaint said that on October 25, she received a call from her sister saying that Upkar had tried to strangle her, but the phone went silent soon after.

Later, Trishla received information that Sarita’s house caught fire the same night and she also died in the fire.
