Waniassa: Attempted murder charges after machete attack on Canberra home left man fighting for his life

Police have charged a man with attempted murder after a frenzied attack on a machete-wielding man at a Canberra home.

A 30-year-old Garran man allegedly attacked the victim with a machete inside the home in Wanniassa on September 4.

At around 5pm on the day in question, police and emergency services attended the property on Ashley Drive following reports that a man had been seriously injured.

The man suffered life-threatening injuries, including multiple deep cuts and fractures, before he was treated at the scene by ACT Ambulance Service paramedics and transported to hospital.

He later reportedly underwent life-saving surgery and remained in an induced coma for four days.

The offender fled the scene before police arrived and officers from the major crime squad began efforts to identify and locate the suspect.

Officers surrounded a bus for interstate travel last Thursday and surrounded the suspect before arresting him.

The man, charged with one count of attempted murder, is scheduled to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court.

Police continue to appeal for any witnesses to come forward as investigators are confident there are other witnesses who could provide important information about the attack and the suspect’s movements following the attack.

Police are also seeking information about the weapon believed to have been used in the attack. Anyone who has seen it or knows its location is asked to come forward.
