14 inmates of Bhondsi jail released in Lok Adalat

14 inmates of Bhondsi district jail, accused of various petty crimes ranging from burglary to car theft, were released after a special hearing in Lok Adalat on Saturday, officials said. The convicts admitted their guilt and chief justice (CJM) Ramesh Chandra ordered their immediate release, citing the time spent in detention and the minor nature of the crimes they committed.

“This initiative ensures timely hearings for prisoners and we conduct such Lok Adalats every two to three months,” said Chandra. During his visit, he also inspected the prison and examined the conditions.

The Lok Adalat, organized by District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) secretary and chief justice (CJM) Ramesh Chandra, heard 17 cases. According to authorities, 11 of these were misdemeanor crimes, and 14 inmates who pleaded guilty to the charges were released on the scene, while the remaining six cases were dismissed.

New NALSA president appointed

In a related development, Supreme Court judge Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai has been appointed as the executive chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). Meanwhile, justice Surya Kant was appointed chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC); Both appointments were made by President Droupadi Murmu under the Legal Services Authority Act 1987. Of course, NALSA and SCLSC can conduct Lok Adalats. Legal Services Authorities Act 1987.

Speaking about the appointment of Justice Gavai, CJM Chandra said: “Justice Gavai’s leadership will increase access to justice for the economically weaker sections and raise public awareness about legal rights. “Under his guidance, NALSA will work to ensure justice for the poor and make citizens aware of their legal rights.”
