Taylor’s College Celebrates the Importance of Play in Child Development

Recognizing the importance of play as a core activity that fosters all-round development in children, Taylor’s College hosted Play and Learn, focusing on play-based learning activities and interactions for children in the Klang Valley region. The event, organized under the leadership of academics and students of the Diploma in Early Childhood Education (DECE) program, celebrates World Children’s Day. The initiative strengthens the university’s commitment to early childhood education and community engagement.

In line with UNICEF’s World Children’s Day theme, For Every Child, Every Right, the Play and Learn The event featured interactive spaces designed to promote holistic development through play in early childhood, with a particular focus on the right to freedom of expression using multimodal senses. Focusing on play-based and sensory learning experiences, the zones offered activities that engaged different areas of childhood development, including cognitive, social, emotional, and physical skills, such as sensory play, messy play, and physical play.

The event highlighted the vital role of play in a child’s development; demonstrated how play stimulates brain growth, improves problem solving, encourages creativity, and teaches social skills such as sharing and empathy. Play also helps children express their emotions, build resilience, improve their physical abilities and increase their self-confidence, helping them develop essential skills that lay the foundation for future success.

Powered by WePlay, Play and Learn The Diploma in Early Childhood Education (DECE) has provided students with a valuable platform to apply their classroom knowledge in a real-world environment. Students played an active role in designing and managing various interactive spaces to create enriching, play-based experiences. Under the guidance of faculty advisors, this experience also allowed DECE students to engage collaboratively with families and communities, deepening their understanding of how these interactions enrich the educational environment and support a holistic approach to early childhood development.

“Early childhood education is the foundation of lifelong learning,” said Taylor’s College Campus Director Josephine Tan. “At Taylor’s, we prioritize a nurturing, community-centered approach where our DECE students not only gain academic knowledge and hands-on experience but also actively engage with the community. “This commitment exemplifies our commitment to producing highly skilled, work-ready graduates who are ready to make a meaningful contribution to early childhood education,” he continued.

YB Michelle Ng Mei Sze, ADUN Subang Jaya congratulated the event and said: “Play and Learn It is a fantastic initiative that embodies the belief that ‘it takes a village to raise a child’, which is at the heart of early childhood development. “This event reinforces our commitment to supporting educational programs that empower young students, and we are proud to see local institutions like Taylor’s College actively creating opportunities for our children to learn and develop.”

The DECE program at Taylor’s College offers a rigorous two-and-a-half-year curriculum designed to equip students with the knowledge, competencies, and values necessary for a successful career in early childhood education. Students benefit from a unique learning environment at Taylor’s Center for Childhood Development and Innovation (CCDI); This allows students to learn through hands-on application, thus preparing them for the confidence and expertise needed to succeed in their field. The program also integrates a hands-on and work-based learning (WBL) model, immersing students in practical experiences in teaching and learning as well as supporting management through partnerships with local kindergartens.
