Giants’ Brian Daboll refuses to give up as his terrible offense ruins his season

giants 2-9 largely due to coach Brian Daboll‘s offense is terrible.

But Daboll won’t give up on his play-calling duties.

He was asked Monday if he was considering switching play callers.

“No,” he said. “We will maintain the status quo here, especially in this short week. But we definitely need to do a better job.”

That’s the understatement of the season, especially after star rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers. essentially blasting Daboll’s decision making After another heartbreaking loss on Sunday.

By the way, no matter what happens (not much right now), Daboll said it would be nice if quarterback Tommy DeVito goes to the Cowboys Thanksgiving game. He missed a hit near the end of Sunday’s disastrous 30-7 loss to the Buccaneers but was able to bounce back.

“I’m hopeful, but I don’t know,” Daboll said of DeVito’s status on Thanksgiving. “I haven’t talked to the training staff. I expect you’ll be ready to go.”

Last week, Daboll surprised and confused the locker room by moving third-stringer DeVito into the starting role over second-stringer Drew Lock when the Giants finally benched Daniel Jones and put him in bubble wrap. Last week’s absurd chaos ended when the Giants granted Jones’ release request on Friday. They were destroyed by the Bucs two days later.

Daboll’s offense was again uncompetitive in that game. This is a season-long problem. But Daboll, who could be fired along with general manager Joe Schoen, isn’t inclined to give up his play-calling duties right now (or perhaps ever).

To do so would be a clear admission of failure. In 2022, before Daboll’s first season on the job, he hired Mike Kafka as the play-calling offensive coordinator. Then, amid the defeats and drama in 2023, Daboll occasionally took away Kafka’s play-calling duties. And before this hot third season, Daboll put all the pressure on himself, but starting in Week 1, he completely took over the play calling.

This followed an offseason in which Daboll prevented Kafka from interviewing for the job of Seattle’s play-calling offensive coordinator. So Daboll forced Kafka to stay and stuffed him in a broom closet. Daboll then went on to lead an embarrassing sting operation. One of the most embarrassing seasons in Giants history.

But other than that, Daboll has enjoyed exciting success as a full-time game caller.
