2 children killed, 3 injured in mobile home fire west of Detroit

(WXYZ) — Two children were killed and three others were injured in a mobile home fire Sunday in west Detroit.

The incident occurred in the Glen Ridge mobile home community of Haggerty in Canton County. Officials said the fire call came in around 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

There aren’t many answers right now. The biggest question is what caused this terrible fire. Authorities also did not share the ages of the three children.

The Canton fire chief said a call like this is every firefighter’s nightmare.

“This is the worst thing we could have faced,” Canton Fire Chief Christopher Stoecklein said. “This is very important for our department. We haven’t had a loss here in a long time.”

The chief said it has been 30 years since firefighters experienced such a loss.

He said two parents and three young children were home at the time, and flames had already engulfed the house when firefighters arrived. While 4 members of the family managed to get out, one child was still trapped inside.

Chief Stoecklein said the other child was in critical but stable condition and the two adults were also stable.

Neighbor Wendy Herdell got emotional talking about the family living in the house:

“Three little kids, five and under… the sweetest. They hugged me every time they saw me. I was talking to them a week ago and now two of them are gone and they’ve lost everything,” Herdell said. .

We were told that the structure was a total loss.

“It moves fast. Right? Fire moves fast inside these mobile homes,” he said.

Mental health experts are also available to the rescue teams who responded to this call on Sunday night.

It is currently believed that two children died from smoke-related injuries, but a medical examination will need to confirm the cause of death.

The chief had this message for the victims’ family: “We are here to support you. Your tragedy is our tragedy. We grieve for you and will continue to pray for you.”
