Garden City police officer involved in crash over weekend

GARDEN CITY, Kan. (KWCH) – A Garden City police officer and his driver were taken to the hospital with minor injuries following a crash over the weekend.

The Garden City Police Department said around 6 p.m. Saturday, the officer was in the 1200 block of N. Taylor when he attempted to stop a speeding motorcycle from W. Kansas Avenue to W. Buffalo Jones Boulevard.

The police department said a Ford Explorer was stopped in the left lane of traffic to turn south onto Pearl Street, at which time the officer activated the lights and sirens and passed the Explorer on the left as the vehicle turned south. As a result of the collision of two vehicles, the police officer lost control and hit the guide wire of the electric pole and stopped in the middle of the road. The motorcycle continued down W. Jones Boulevard and was not located.

The explorer’s driver and Officer were taken to St. Petersburg for treatment. He was taken to Catherine Hospital.

After the police completed their investigation into the accident, traffic was blocked for approximately 2 hours and both vehicles were removed from the scene with a tow truck.

“Any traffic accident involving a Garden City Police Department Officer is thoroughly investigated and a separate internal investigation is also conducted,” GCPD said.
