Teen sentenced to prison after attempted robbery in Lynn Haven ends in death

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – A 17-year-old involved in a drug robbery that led to a stabbing death was sentenced to thirty years in prison, State’s Attorney Larry Basford announced Friday.

The incident occurred in 2021 when three boys came together for the first time to participate in a drug deal; The situation turned deadly when two boys attempted to rob Savien Craven, who was 15 years old at the time. Gage Michael Griner, 17, of Southport, was sentenced Friday to 30 years in prison after pleading no contest to a Second Degree Felony Murder charge.

According to the State Attorney’s Office, under Florida’s felony murder laws, Griner was responsible for the other child’s death even though he did not stab him because he was involved in a potentially violent crime.

“The intent of Florida law is to ensure that people think twice before participating in a crime that could lead to violence,” the State Attorney’s Office said.
