The Story Behind the Beautiful Moment Ethan Slater Witnessed on His First Day on the Set of Wicked

We had 100 dancers working on Dancing Through Life and Jon (M. What a big statement to make to 100 dancers! It’s one thing to start a production with that kind of energy, but it’s another thing entirely to keep it consistent throughout the shooting of two films being produced simultaneously. But Jon M. Chu managed to do just that, and Slater continued:

This seems like a trite thing someone might say on the first day of a long project, but Jon stuck with it throughout the entire process. I think there was real community, and when you create community in the cast, on stage, or in the theater company, it really came out beautifully.

Well this makes sense! As I mentioned before, even though you’re watching a movie with a reported budget of $145 million, something about the environment makes it feel as if the extremely talented cast that makes up Shiz’s students are your peers. As a Broadway veteran, this is what Ethan Slater was talking about when he talked about “community” in the theater, and it certainly carries over to the big screen.

This isn’t just something I noticed, as the cast seemed to sense a similar, wide-eyed theater kid energy. Slater went on to tell the following anecdote about the film’s own Fiyero and the aforementioned Dancing Through Life series lead, Jonathan Bailey:

I remember Johnny Bailey saying one day: ‘It really feels like we’re making a student film, but then suddenly it’s not.’ But that was really the feeling. It feels like we’re making a student film and then suddenly you’re like, ‘Look at us now.’

Now look at yourself! After tons of success on Broadway, Ethan Slater is starring in one of the biggest blockbusters of the last decade and one of the biggest movie musicals of all time.
