Wheat Ridge police use drone to catch burglary suspect

DENVER (KDVR) — Wheat Ridge Police Department used One of the police drones to capture a suspect He allegedly broke into a home in late October.

According to police, around 9 p.m. on Oct. 28, officers responded to a home along the Clear Creek Greenbelt after a woman called to report someone had broken in through her kitchen window.

The suspect was known to the family, according to Wheat Ridge police.

The caller told 911 dispatchers that the suspect was last seen walking toward Clear Creek Road.

As it turns out, one of the people working that night was an employee of the department. eight drone operators.

A drone was deployed in Prospect Park to assist in the search for the suspect.

The drone used infrared technology, allowing the officer to locate a heat signature in the bushes just south of the road after coordinating with teammates on the ground.

The suspect was detained. Police recommended first-degree criminal trespass and criminal mischief charges to the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Wheat Ridge police have had eight drone pilots regularly use drones in different ways since April.

Police departments in other jurisdictions have also used drones in various ways. This includes the Lakewood Police Department’s drone team. Helped save a teenager’s life in May and the Boulder Police Department’s drone team, who helped find a missing woman in January.

The Denver Fire Department also has a drone program that it uses in a variety of ways during firefighting responses.
