The woman was seriously injured during Chilliwack’s arrest; IIO was called

A woman arrested by RCMMP in Chilliwack over the weekend has serious injuries and will require surgery, according to the province’s police watchdog.

In a statement from the BC Independent Investigations Bureau, it was stated that police were called to a bar on Gaetz Street around 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning on a report of a drunk woman.

“Upon arrival, officers located the woman and attempted to speak with her. An interaction occurred and officers arrested her, resulting in a serious injury,” a spokesperson for the agency wrote.

“He was then taken by ambulance to hospital where it was determined he would need surgery.”

The IIO is called when any interaction with police results in serious injury or death, regardless of whether there is an allegation of misconduct.

Chilliwack RCMP said police were called to the bar because the woman was disabled and was behind the wheel of a parked car.

“The woman eventually exited the vehicle, but then attempted to re-enter the vehicle. Officers attempted to stop her, but the situation escalated further, resulting in officers taking her into custody,” the detachment said in a statement.

Anyone with information is asked to call the IIO at 1-855-446-8477.
