TL;DR

  • YouTube recommendations seem to be inaccurate for many users.
  • People see very old videos or irrelevant music playlists they watched in YouTube recommendations.
  • The issue appears to have started around noon EST on November 25, with many users reporting the issue on Reddit.

There is a problem with YouTube recommendations. It looks like an algorithm change has put a damper on recommendations for many YouTube users who are seeing very old videos or a bunch of music playlists they’ve already watched.

Several YouTube users reporting relevant redditand the problem seems to have occurred only a few hours ago.

“Everything was fine two hours ago, but since then I’m only being recommended videos with less than 1,000 views on topics I don’t care about,” wrote one user who started a thread about the problem on the r/youtube subreddit.

“I had the exact same thing. My feed is garbage and shows all these music playlists. They ruined something,” said another user.

“Yes, I came to this subreddit specifically to see if anyone else had posted about this. My algorithm sucks. BAD. Since noon today (EST),” another commenter complained.

Another commenter agreed, noting that the issue with YouTube recommendations began around noon EST on November 25th. Last month I was offered podcast playlists from channels I subscribe to, something I’m not interested in (but I’ve never used YouTube podcasts).

We will be monitoring the situation closely and reaching out to YouTube for a statement. Meanwhile, it is also possible that the platform will address the problem after becoming aware of it.
