Nigeria: Sanwo-Olu Sacks Deputy Who Says Arsonists ‘Hunted and Executed’

Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has suspended his senior special assistant on print media, Wale Ajetunmobi, for his post on personal username X.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has suspended his senior special assistant on print media, Wale Ajetunmobi, over his controversial post on his personal account. X He suggests that some arsonists were “hunted down and executed” by the government.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Gbenga Akosile, announced the suspension in a brief statement on Tuesday.

He said Mr. Ajetunmobi was suspended from office for misrepresenting the state government and that Governor Sanwo-Olu administration does not support any form of extrajudicial killing.

“Mr Ajetunmobi’s suspension followed a misrepresentation of facts in his personal “X” account regarding a past incident.

“The Governor wishes to state categorically that his administration does not condone any form of extrajudicial punishment and will not be part of such action. That is not who we are. This is not our way,” the statement said.

The announced suspension follows a recent incident. report By PREMIUM TIMES Mr. Ajetunmobi’s

Sources close to the governor told PREMIUM TIMES that he was furious with Mr. Ajetumobi after he was informed of the story. The governor reportedly ordered him to delete the tweet, which he did.

Mr. Ajetunmobi’s now-deleted post alleges the involvement of security operatives in the extrajudicial killing of arsonists who attacked the TVC during the 2020 #EndSARS protest.

“The full story of the people who burned the TVC in 2020 will one day be told with bloody clips and images. There is one point that should not be forgotten: the majority of them were caught and executed.

“One of them, a young boy who was dealing in cooking gas around Ketu, was found with an AK-47 in the field. Even his neighbors were shocked. But it would be better to save the real issue for later,” he said.

To clarify his statement, Mr. Ajetunmobi explained that some of the arsonists were neutralized by the soldiers and killed during the exchange of gunfire.

“Haha… you want to create a story in your mind. What is extrajudicial execution here? Some of the people were chased by soldiers and exchanged fire. Then the arsonists were neutralized and killed in the process. Others escaped. Is this extrajudicial execution for you?” replied to an X user.
