Police say nearly 4,000 people have been convicted of GVB

Alarming statistics have been released by police as the country celebrates the start of the 16 Days of Activism campaign this week.

National spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said they are intensifying efforts to hold criminals accountable.

It says the sentences were imposed between April 2023 and September of this year.

“From April 2023 to September 2024, the FCS unit recorded the following achievements: 16,668 GBVF suspect raids were carried out across the country, 29,150 GBVF perpetrators were arrested, 556 defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment, 480 defendants were sentenced to 20 years or more in prison, 998 defendants were sentenced to 10 to 19 years in prison.” He was sentenced to imprisonment up to 1792 defendants were sentenced to one year in prison. He was sentenced to up to nine years in prison.”

The statement comes a day after Police Minister Senzo Mchunu released crime statistics for the second quarter of the 2024/25 financial year.

While some crimes appear to be on the decline, murders of women and children are still high.
