Trey Smith on KC Chiefs’ ‘Classic Patrick Mahomes’ Game-Winning Drive Against Panthers

Kansas City Chiefs We’re no strangers to last-second victories, but Down to the wire against the Carolina Panthers That certainly wasn’t the plan for KC’s 10th win of the 2024 NFL season.

It wasn’t a spotless day in the stadium for Chiefs right guard Trey Smith, as the Chiefs’ offensive line allowed five sacks to quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The rest of KC’s up-and-down O-linebut the outcome was familiar: The Chiefs’ offense, led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, made the game-winning snap before time expired.

To kick off media availability Monday, Smith was asked for his thoughts on the matter. Mahomes’ post-game tackle and what it’s like to see the quarterback constantly make plays like that when the game is on the line.

“This is classic Patrick Mahomes, man,” Smith said. “Just expanding games and being the best competitor, finding a way to win and doing whatever it takes to get the victory and win.”

Smith was then asked about the Chiefs’ late-game success and how the team mentally approaches those situations.

“The approach is pretty much the same,” Smith said. “I just try to focus and focus on the moment so you understand what you need to do in your job and what is required of your job. I think it takes elite focus to understand the task at hand. An operator like Patrick Mahomes to coordinate everyone and fine-tune everything the way we need it and “At the end of the day, if we can all focus together on our single role – football is the best team sport – we all focus on our singular purpose and purpose, and we will be able to achieve our goals and be successful.”

The Chiefs consistently found themselves in games that weren’t decided until the final seconds, leaving Kansas City in an exciting situation throughout the year. How does it feel to finish games with wins over and over again?

“There’s a lot of parity in this league, and every time you get a W, every time you win, you’re going to be happy and excited about it,” Smith said. “It’s always great to be able to come off the field and double up like that, but at the end of the day there’s so much parity in this league I can’t repeat it enough. You can always win, They’re so hard to find in this league and every time we get it we get a W on the scoreboard.”
