New York Knicks’ Slow Style Helps Offense

The New York Knicks had a mixed start to the season, going 9-7 and sitting in fourth place in the Eastern Conference. The team has achieved impressive victories as well as brutal defeats; most recently 121-106 against the Utah Jazz.

There is a big deficiency in defense for New York in the team standings so far. 21st in defensive rating (115.7). While the Knicks may not exhibit the usual tendency to be a tenacious defensive force, they are exceeding expectations on offense. Team ranking second in offensive rating (120.9)Just behind the 17-1 Cleveland Cavaliers (122.8).

Related to this is New York’s slow style of play. There are Knicks 28th in NBA in pace (97.19)reflects a few quick breaks. Team ranking this season 17th so far in fast breaks per game (14.7).

New York followed the same trend as last season. Team ranked died at full speed last year (95.96)and were still an elite offensive team. 117.3 rating (7th in NBA). The only difference is that the defense was noticeably better last season as the Knicks finished second in the Eastern Conference.

Head coach Tom Thibodeau encouraged the Knicks to run a balanced offense with the addition of weapons to the team. Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges. Josh Hart still appears to be running and pushing the tempo in transition, but New York has been extremely selective with the pace at which he plays the ball.
