RITBA warns of message scam demanding unpaid toll on Kansas road

Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority On Tuesday, it warned customers about a common text scam known as smishing. Customers reported receiving a message from the Kansas road referring to an unpaid toll. Smishing is a type of phishing that involves sending fake communications via text message.

“We are committed to keeping our customers’ information safe,” he said. Lori Caron Silveirathe general manager of the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority said in a statement. “We urge our customers to be careful; if a message looks suspicious, it is most likely a scam. We recommend using safe methods, such as visiting our official website, to check the status of your account.”

  • The messages appear to be from RITBA and contain urgent messages regarding a customer’s account and warning of late fees if the balance is not paid. The link leads to a fake website.
  • Customers are encouraged to visit the official RITBA E-ZPass website: https://www.ezpassritba.com/To control your accounts securely.
  • Customers wishing to report this scam can visit the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at: https://www.ic3.gov/. Suspicious messages may also be forwarded to 7726 (SPAM) to notify mobile phone providers.
