Brothers arrested for allegedly opening fire near children and businesses in south Las Vegas valley

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Two brothers are facing charges in a shooting that forced people to hide as bullets struck vehicles and nearby businesses, including an indoor playground where dozens of children were present, according to documents obtained by 8 News Now.

The shooting happened Sunday, Nov. 3, in front of the LOL Kids Club on South Rainbow Boulevard near Warm Springs Road. According to the documents, more than 50 people, mostly children, were playing inside when gunfire erupted, hitting the building and shattering windows.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with a man who said he went to Dollar Tree to purchase a birthday balloon and card for his grandmother. While there, he noticed a Hyundai Santa Fe parked next to his BMW.

A few minutes later, he saw a man leaning out the driver’s side window of the Hyundai and appearing to be writing something on his car. The man told police he left the store to confront the driver and tell him to leave his vehicle alone.

In response, the driver of the Hyundai shouted using clear language.

The Hyundai then drove off and the man got in his car to follow them. However, he lost sight of the Hyundai but retrieved its license plate number. Police said the man then returned to the store to pick up his gifts.

Police said at this point a Challenger pulled into the parking lot. He told LVMPD officers that although the man wasn’t paying much attention to the Challenger, he began to sense something was wrong and walked toward his BMW.

As he approached, a man in the Challenger yelled at him, then pulled out a gun and began shooting, according to the arrest report. The man ran towards the LOL Kids Club for shelter. A witness told police that he entered the store but immediately left when he saw children inside.

A police officer said he observed through surveillance footage that parents were “grabbing their children in an attempt to take them to safety.”

The Challenger drove off and the man told police he believed the passenger was the same person he saw in the Hyundai.

During their investigation, police conducted a registration check of the vehicle and tracked it to a specific address. Surveillance footage confirmed Hyundai’s arrival at this address.

On Nov. 4, LVMPD said they observed a man leaving a home and when they attempted to stop him, the man threw a black gun and fled on foot. He was captured soon after and identified as Vontahg McGuire. A background check revealed McGuire was a convicted felon from Michigan.

Police continued to watch the house and saw a Mercedes arriving. While they were trying to stop the Mercedes, a person matching the description of the person seen on the security cameras got out of the vehicle and entered the house, disobeying the police’s instructions.

The person surrendered approximately 15 minutes later and was taken into custody. His name was determined as Vametrius McGuire.

Court documents show different spellings of both men’s last names, but Vanmetris McGruie and Vontahj McGuire face charges of conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. Vontahj McGuire, a convicted felon, is also charged with illegally carrying a weapon.
