Des Moines man who attacked victim with baseball bat sentenced to 25 years in prison

DES MOINES, Iowa – A Des Moines man attacked another man with a baseball batThe suspect, who suffered life-threatening injuries, was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Tuesday.

After an Iowa Cubs baseball game in April 2023, 34-year-old Joshua Jordan Crouch stopped at a liquor store in Des Moines. Surveillance footage captured victim Mario Zamora Yepez, 37, parking next to Crouch’s vehicle in the liquor store parking lot, according to court records. The video shows the two men talking to each other when Crouch grabs a wooden bat from his car, which he claimed he bought at a Cubs game, and hits Zamora in the head. Crouch is then seen on video getting into his car and driving away.

Suspect killed in officer-involved shooting in downtown Des Moines early Tuesday

Zamora suffered life-threatening injuries in the attack, according to court records. Assistant District Attorney Kevin Bell told him Zamora would have died if not for life-saving procedures performed by a neurosurgeon, the Polk County District Attorney’s Office said in a press release.

Although he claimed the attack was in self-defense, a Polk County jury in September found Crouch guilty of attempted murder and intentional wounding causing serious injury; these sentences carried maximum sentences of 25 years and 10 years in prison, respectively.

On Tuesday, District Judge David Nelmark ordered Crouch to run their sentences concurrently (concurrently) to a maximum of 25 years in prison. The Polk County District Attorney’s Office said in a press release that Judge Nelmark decided to impose concurrent sentences because the two charges relate to the same attack and not separate attacks. Crouch must serve at least 17 1/2 years in prison.

According to the lawyer’s statement, Zamora died by falling down the stairs on May 3, 2024.
