Shelter sets average daily operating cost target on Giving Tuesday

CARBONDALE, Illinois (KFVS) – We are one week away from Tuesday, when people around the world will open their hearts and pockets to give to those in need.

This year, a Heartland shelter is asking the community for help.

The Survivor Empowerment Center in Carbondale helps survivors of sexual assault and domestic abuse. Work is important and also expensive.

Leaders at the shelter are asking people to help raise a total of $6,900; This is the average cost of running the shelter for a single day.

You can pay as you wish while the campaign continues via PayPal.

According to the Survivor Empowerment Center, a donation of $150 will get one person to a safe place away from their abuser. $100 covers the cost of one night in the shelter, and $40 covers a full day’s food.

Development and Fundraising Specialist Callie Metzger said people don’t have to give these specific amounts to make an impact. There is no minimum or maximum.

“We can do so much with this money, I think people take it for granted,” he said. “If you could give $5, that might be food for someone, and that might not seem like much, but many people stayed with their abusers for 10 years because they didn’t know how to feed themselves if they left.”

Beyond ensuring physical safety, the Survivor Empowerment Center aims to show people that they can have a future free from those who made them suffer in the past.

“When you give that $5, you’re doing so much more than just giving $5. You give that person hope, you help them not believe the lie that they can’t survive without their abuser,” Metzger said.
