Sambhal violence: Uttar Pradesh government to display posters of ‘stone collectors’, cover damage costs | Latest News India

Posters of ‘stone collectors’ will be displayed in prominent public places as the Uttar Pradesh government plans to recover the cost of damage to public property from protesters involved in the Sambhal violence.

Survey conducted by court order Shahi Jama Masjid A clash in Sambhal’s Kot Garvi area, sparked by a petition claiming that a Harihar temple once stood in the area, led to clashes on Sunday, killing four people and injuring several others, including police personnel.

An official spokesperson of the state government said: “The UP government has adopted a tough stance against those involved in the Sambhal violence. Posters of stone throwers and traitors will be displayed publicly and compensation for damages will be demanded. “Rewards may also be given to those who provide information leading to their arrest.”

In a similar move, the government had earlier put up posters of people accused of vandalism during the anti-CAA protests in 2020 at important places, including the state capital.

However, the posters were eventually taken down by court order.

Sambhal witnessed intense violence on Sunday when a large crowd gathered near a mosque and started chanting slogans as the investigation team continued their work.

The situation spiraled out of control as protesters clashed with security forces, allegedly setting fire to vehicles and hurling rocks.

Opposition parties criticized the ruling BJP both at the Center and in Uttar Pradesh following Sunday’s violence. While Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav accused the state government of staging a “riot”, senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra alleged that the ruling party was fueling divisions between Hindus and Muslims.
