Oak Brook police said the dispute stemmed from a police investigation into a burglary and retail theft suspect.

The suspect vehicle wanted in connection with the crimes was located at the Oakbrook Center shopping center by a license plate reader. When officers attempted a traffic stop, the suspect fled before being involved in a crash at the intersection of Route 83 and 22nd Street, police said.

Authorities said the driver refused to exit the vehicle following the crash after multiple commands from officers.

At one point, officers approached a vehicle with what appeared to be a shield and detained the driver. After the police reported that he was injured in the accident, this person was taken into the ambulance.

The rear window of the vehicle the man was in was shattered, and police said he was “disabled” by officers with a bean bag so they could see inside the vehicle.

Police closed northbound Route 83 during the incident.

Oak Brook police say the investigation into the burglary and retail theft is ongoing.

Further information was not immediately available.
