Dhaka high court refuses to ban ISKCON Bangladesh amid controversy over priest’s arrest | World News

Dhaka The high court on Thursday refused to issue a suo motu order “to ban ISKCON’s activities in Bangladesh” after it was reported that the government had already taken necessary measures. Daily Star reported.

Supreme Court lawyer Md Monir Uddin had submitted newspaper reports on the matter. ISKCONHe requested the court to impose ban and impose Section 144 on ‘s activities in Chattogram, Rangpur and Dinajpur.

Amid growing concerns over the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh, a new petition has been filed calling for the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) to be banned in the country.

According to the Dhaka Tribune, the legal notice accuses the organization of being a “radical organization” that engages in activities that threaten national security and fuel social unrest.

The petition, submitted by Supreme Court lawyer Al Mamun Russell on behalf of 10 other legal experts, demands the prosecution of those responsible for the alleged murder of the government’s legal officer, Lawyer Saiful Islam.

The notification was sent to Bangladesh’s Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Law and Justice and Inspector General of Police on Wednesday.

According to a Dhaka Tribune report, the announcement claims that ISKCON operates as a “radical organization” that allegedly incites sectarian violence and promotes religious intolerance in Bangladesh.

The petition also links ISKCON to the alleged murder of a lawyer during protests following his arrest. Chinmoy Krishna Dashe attributes this to the group’s “blatant disregard for law and order”.

It also accuses ISKCON of forcibly recruiting members, seizing Sanatan temples, evicting members of the Sanatan community, and even attacking mosques to impose their beliefs on traditional Hindu communities.

ISKON priest arrested

The high court’s decision comes amid controversy over the arrest of former ISKCON Bangladesh priest Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari on charges of sedition, which led to protests and unrest in the country.
